How to Connect Mercado Pago to Your Shopify Store in Chile (Step by Step)
Updated
Mercado Pago is one of the most recognized payment methods in Chile and has an official integration with Shopify. In this tutorial, you'll see what you need before starting, how to activate Mercado Pago from Shopify, how to get the credentials, and how to make a test purchase to ensure everything works.
Before you start: requirements to connect Mercado Pago
Key steps: To connect Mercado Pago to your Shopify store in Chile, you need to go to Settings > Payments, choose Mercado Pago as a provider, log in to Mercado Pago Developers, create an integration, and copy the production credentials (public_key and access_token). Then paste these credentials in Shopify and activate the provider.
What you need to have ready
- Active Shopify store (even on trial), with admin access.
- Mercado Pago account for Chile (ideally the same one you'll use for billing).
- Basic business data: business name, tax ID (RUT), and industry.
Step 1: Enter the Shopify panel and prepare the payments section
Log in as admin
Go to admin.shopify.com and log in. If you have multiple stores, select the correct one.
Go to Settings > Payments
In the bottom-left menu, click on Settings (gear icon) and then enter the Payments section.
Step 2: Activate Mercado Pago as a provider
Find Mercado Pago
In the "Third-party payment providers" section, click "Add provider" and search for Mercado Pago.
Start activation
Select Mercado Pago and click Continue or Activate. It will show you a configuration screen where you'll need to paste your credentials. Leave it open for now.
Step 3: Get the credentials from Mercado Pago
Go to "Your integrations"
In another tab, go to Mercado Pago Developers and log in. Navigate to the "Your integrations" section.
Create application
If you don't have one, click "Create integration", assign a name (e.g., "Shopify Store") and select "Online payment" or "Shopify".
Copy production credentials
In the application page, go to Production credentials and copy:
Public KeyAccess Token
Important
Use production credentials to charge real money. Test credentials only work for internal simulations and do not process real money.
Step 4: Paste the credentials in Shopify
Complete configuration
Go back to Shopify and paste the Public Key and the Access Token in the corresponding fields.
Save and activate
Click "Save credentials" and then press "Activate" to enable Mercado Pago as an active provider in your store.
Step 5: Configure experience and test
Sort providers (Optional)
You can use the free app "Mercado Pago Sort checkouts" to put Mercado Pago in the first position at checkout.
Make a test payment
Create a low-price product ($500 CLP), enter as a customer, and make a real purchase with a card. Verify that:
- The order appears as Paid in Shopify.
- The transaction appears as Approved in Mercado Pago.
